Navitas Solar Installations Ltd recently completed a significant Solar PV installation for Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust at the Embrace Unit, based at Capitol Court in Barnsley. The project was funded through the NHS Decarbonisation Fund and supports the Trust’s ongoing commitment to reducing carbon emissions and improving energy resilience.

The Embrace Unit provides a highly specialised 24-hour transport service for critically ill babies and children across Yorkshire and the Humber. Operating seven days a week, the service carries out urgent transfers between hospitals across the region and beyond, making reliable energy provision an important part of supporting this vital frontline operation.

By generating clean electricity on site, the new system will help reduce reliance on the national grid, support protection against rising energy costs and contribute to the wider NHS Net Zero journey. The system is expected to provide long-term benefits over its 25 to 30 year lifespan.

“This is a really positive step for the Trust and for Embrace. By generating our own electricity on site, we’re reducing our reliance on the grid, lowering costs, and making the service more resilient. Just as importantly, it helps us play our part in reducing carbon emissions.”

Jo Whiston, Lead Nurse at Embrace, added:
“The solar installation is a big step forward for us. During daylight hours, the unit can now run on the energy we generate ourselves, which is a great position to be in for a 24/7 service.”

The installation also creates future opportunities for the Trust, including supporting the transition to electric vehicles and the potential for on-site charging powered by renewable energy.
