Navitas Solar Completes Solar Installation for Sheffield Children's NHS Foundation Trust

Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust marks Earth Day with new solar energy system at Embrace transport base.

Navitas Solar is proud to have completed a significant solar PV installation at Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust’s Embrace Unit at Capitol Court, Barnsley. This project, funded through the NHS Decarbonisation Fund, supports the NHS’s ambitious goal to achieve Net Zero carbon emissions.

About the Project
The Embrace Unit provides a highly specialised, round-the-clock transport service for critically ill babies and children across Yorkshire and the Humber. Operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, this vital service carries out urgent transfers between hospitals across the region and beyond.

Key Benefits:
- 91,000 kWh of clean electricity generated annually
- Reduced reliance on the national grid
- Protection against rising energy costs
- Enhanced resilience for this critical frontline service
- Expected lifespan of 25-30 years

Supporting the NHS Net Zero Journey
Peter Knowles, Director of Estates at Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, said “This is a really positive step for the Trust and for Embrace. By generating our own electricity on site, we’re reducing our reliance on the grid, lowering costs, and making the service more resilient. Just as importantly, it helps us play our part in reducing carbon emissions.”

Jo Whiston, Lead Nurse at Embrace, added “The solar installation is a big step forward for us. During daylight hours, the unit can now run on the energy we generate ourselves, which is a great position to be in for a 24/7 service.”

Looking to the Future
This installation creates exciting opportunities for the Trust, including supporting the transition to electric vehicles such as ambulance fleets, with the potential for on-site charging powered entirely by renewable energy.
